Reviews
Splendid, Sensational, Hilarious. All these things and more in this book that succeeds in making even the most unwilling reader read on; it does what any book tries to do: satisfy and please the reader. Ned and his fellow exotics get themselves in all sorts of trouble. The element of fantasy tags along well with humour and put together make a magnificent book. Not every book has cannibals, magic potions, flying cauldrons and a spotty teenager as the hero.
This book not only accomplishes the main goal but goes beyond and produces an amazing piece of work.
A book fit for a King

I must say that I started this book with a strange feeling, a little bored with my usual literary fare, I was seeking light relief. I was mroe than pleasantly surprised by the imagination and humour this new author brought to the page. The first half dozen pages seemed somewhat "off the wall" but the mind was soon tuned in and free to dream. The book has a core theme of complete nuttiness all the way through and the author dives off at every possible turn to explore the funnier side effects of the characters' consequential actions , all the time returning to the main theme- good over evil!. At times I was laughing out loud- disturbing when you are "alone in public" - a sure sign that what you are reading really is funny. This book is far from hard work, it was a pleasure to read and brought a real smile to my face. It is accessible to anyone and is currenlty being enjoyed by my 10 year old daughter (she thinks it's "wicked"). Anyone wanting to break away from their usual diet of reading for a change could do far worse than taking An Exotic Adventure.

The Exotic Adventure by Martin Edhouse
Review by E. R. Penrose
This book is one which will appeal to all age groups although I
suspect principally aimed at children up to early teenage.
Everything about the plot, characters and the unexpected twist at
the end of The Exotic Adventure is beautifully written.
As one gathers from the title this is an adventure story. Led by
our hero Ned with his merry band of "Exotics" (who are
mystical beings, coming from different parts of the Exotic
Woods), each group possesses different magical powers. The story
describes their adventures as they attempt to win the competition
for the hand of the mayor's daughter.
This book is very humerous, particularly the repartee between Ned
and his "Exotics" and would be enjoyed by all the
family.

"The Exotic Adventure" by Martin Edhouse: A Book
Review
by Christine Zibas
Gather Member Martin Edhouse has crafted an enchanting children's
tale
for adults in his new book, The Exotic Adventure. This story,
like so
many stories from childhood, centers around a competition; in
this
case, that competition occurs between awkward teenage Ned and
Lord
Plenty for the hand of the mayor's daughter. To win the desirable
maiden, each hunter must go into the Exotic Woods and locate as
many
species of "exotics" and return to the village green no
later than 5
o'clock at which time the mayor will declare the victor.
As you may suspect, it's the exotics and their goofy likeability
that
make the story what it is. Exotics are magical creatures, and
each
species is endowed with a single magical characteristic that
makes it
both frustrating and helpful to our hero Ned along his way. These
exotics can be downright frustrating in their simple-minded
thinking,
as are some other townsfolk of Betwixt. Indeed, at times it seems
that
only Ned has put on his thinking cap for this adventure, but this
also
lends great charm to this story.
British author Martin Edhouse uses language and storytelling to
create
gentle humor with this tale. Its sweetness is never cloying, but
rather
always on pitch. The exotics become more endearing as the story
progresses, and truly one can imagine a whole set of adventures
for
these crazy, crafty creatures. Their story will appeal to readers
in
the 10 years and up category and is still sophisticated enough
for any
adult who doesn't mind a mild skewering of society today. It's a
perfect story for the whole family to share.
The only caveat for American readers is that some British jokes
may be
missed by the language differences. References to
"spotty" (pimply)
teenagers and Hobnob biscuits (a popular British cookie) may be
lost on
some readers in the United States; however, Edhouse's story is
universal, and even these minor language differences cannot
detract
from this charming tale and exotic adventure.
